Raul Sanllehi was eager to stay with Arsenal before last week's axing.

The Athletic reports Sanllehi was axed as Arsenal's head of football in a decision taken by the board despite him not wanting to leave the club.

The 53-year-old parted company with Arsenal on Saturday after two-and-a-half years overseeing their football operations.

Arsenal's owners thanked Sanllehi for his work as they immediately promoted Vinai Venkatesham in his place.

Stan Kroenke and son Josh made the decision to move Sanllehi on as part of a streamlining process following the impact of Covid-19.

All departments were under analysis as the club announced earlier this month that 55 staff would be made redundant, and Sanllehi is one of those to receive the chop.
