Arsenal are putting the finishing touches on a deal to sign Viktor Gyokeres after a key breakthrough in negotiations with Sporting.

The Gunners have struck a deal worth £54.8million plus £8.6m in potential add-ons but the deal was being held up due to issues over the nature of the add-ons.

But Arsenal are confident those issue are close to be resolved as they finally close in on the top-level striker that Mikel Arteta has been targeting.

Gyokeres has agreed terms on a five-year contract at Arsenal, who are signing one of the most in-demand forwards in Europe.

The 27-year-old Sweden hitman scored 54 goals in 52 matches for Sporting last season and Arsenal identified him as their No1 centre-forward target ahead of Benjamin Sesko.

Arteta hopes the signing of Gyokeres, who has scored 97 goals in 102 matches during his two seasons in Portugal, can help fire Arsenal to the Premier League title next season.

Arsenal have already signed Martin Zubimendi, Christian Norgaard, Kepa Arrizabalaga and Noni Madueke this summer as new sporting director Andrea Berta leads a big summer window.

The Gunners are also closing in on the signing of Cristhian Mosquera, who is flying out to join the squad on their pre-season tour of Asia.
