Atalanta midfielder Remo Freuler has been announced as Nottingham Forest’s fifteenth summer signing via the club’s official website.

The Switzerland international arrives with a wealth of experience, having accumulated 202 appearances for Atalanta in the Italian top flight.

The midfielder captained Atalanta for a large portion of the 2021/22 campaign. He also started every game for his side in last season’s Champions League, where they finished third in their group before reaching the quarter-finals of the Europa League.

Freuler has made 46 appearances for Switzerland since making his international debut in 2017. He started all five games for the Rossocrociati in their run to the quarter-finals of the Euro 2020 tournament.

After six-and-a-half years in Italy, the 30-year-old has joined Steeve Cooper’s side on a three-year contract for around €9 million plus add-ons.

Forest have had a busy summer transfer window, to say the least, with Freuler being their fifteenth new addition.

It remains to be seen if the acquisition of the combative Swiss maestro will end Forest’s interest in Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, whom the Reds initially made a priority midfield target.

Cooper’s side have still been linked with moves for several players, including Olympique Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar and Chelsea defender Emerson Palmieri, who has also drawn interest from Atalanta.

Freuler made over 250 appearances for La Dea, scoring 20 and assisting 23 since joining the club in 2016 from Luzern.

The Swiss club will get 15 percent of his transfer fee as he begins a new chapter in his career with the Premier League newcomers.

Forest began their Premier League season with a 2-0 loss against Newcastle United but managed to get their campaign back on track with a hard-fought victory at home to West Ham United.

Frueler will likely be available for selection when the Reds travel to Goodison Park to face Frank Lampard’s Everton side, who have lost their opening two games of the season.
