Real Madrid produce remarkable comeback to progress

Scorers: Capoue 4′, Chukwueze 41′; Vinícius 57′, Militão 69′, Ceballos 86′.

Real Madrid came from two goals down to beat Villarreal and seal their place in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

Villarreal, who beat Real in the league two weekends ago, looked like they were going to inflict the same fate on Carlo Ancelotti’s side when Étienne Capoue volleyed them in front after just fourt minutes after Gerard Moreno’s flick set him free inside the box.

Samuel Chukwueze doubled the advantage just before half-time, chipping over Thibaut Courtois after being played in by Moreno.

But Real pulled off a sensational second half comeback to turn the game around, with Vinícius Junior slotting into the bottom corner after running on to Dani Ceballos’ pass.

Éder Militão then levelled procedings, reacting first to a rebound from Karim Benzema’s header to poke home from underneath the bar.

The game looked as if it was heading to extra time until Ceballos popped up at the edge of the box to place a shot home after being picked out by Marco Asensio from the byline.

There was no repeat of the defeat in LaLiga this time as Ancelotti’s men showed their critics that they still have the mentality to challenge at the top.

Five-star Barcelona ease through

Scorers: Raphinha 41′, Lewandowski 50′, 90′, Fati 70′, Kessié 77′.

Barcelona eased their way into the quarter-finals with a comprehensive victory over third-tier AD Ceuta.

Barcelona finally broke the deadlock against their stubborn opponents before half-time break with Franck Kessié setting Raphinha away before his left-footed curler from the edge of the box landed in the bottom corner.

Robert Lewandowski doubled that advantage just after the interval after Kessié intercepted a stray ball at the back and played across goal for the Pole to stroke in from close range.

Ansu Fati came from the bench to add a third with a jinxing run into the box before curling the ball into far corner.

Kessié got in on the act himself 13 minutes from time, glancing Raphinha’s cross beyond Tomas Meijas before Lewandowski rounded the victory off in the last minute.
