Real Madrid penalty hero Andriy Lunin was in high spirits, after he played a pivotal role by saving two penalties in the shootout to help his side progress to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League. The backup goalkeeper performed at an exceptional level for 120 minutes against Manchester City and was even better during the shootout.

Lunin joined Madrid back in 2018 as the third-choice keeper before accepting loans to Leganés, Valladolid and Oviedo to gain further experience. The 25-year-old began this season as third choice too but after injuries to Thibaut Courtois and Kepa Arrizabalaga, the Ukrainian has found himself starting Los Blancos’ most important fixtures.

The emergency keeper has risen to the occasion and cemented himself in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans with some breathtaking performances. Lunin made a record nine saves against RB Leipzig in the previous round of the competition and made another eight saves against City at the Etihad.

However, Lunin was quick to shift the attention off himself and instead thanked the rest of the squad for the support they have shown him.

He said: “I am the happiest man in the world. Hard work is rewarded. I’m just happy to help Real Madrid and I want to thank this group for the support.”
