Marco Asensio and Vinícius Jr both had chances to score in the early stages, and it was the Brazilian who then did open the scoring for Real Madrid mid-way through the first half with a great finish into the top corner after being slipped in by Karim Benzema.

Luuk de Jong then had a couple of chances to equalise for Barça in quick succession, but both headers were saved by Thibaut Courtois.

But four minutes before half-time, De Jong did find the net when Éder Militão’s attempted clearance struck the Dutchman and went in off the post to make it 1-1.

Barça made a bright start to the second half, with Ousmane Dembélé and Pedri both missing chances to make it 2-1.

Benzema then went close to putting Madrid 2-1 up when he hit the post, but just a few minutes later the Frenchman did find the net when he tucked home a rebound off the goalkeeper.

But there was to be another twist as Barcelona substitute Ansu Fati drew them level again in the 83rd minute with a header from Jordi Alba’s cross.

With the score level after 90 minutes, the match went to extra-time.

And in the 98th minute Los Blancos took the lead for a third time, with Federico Valverde slotting home at the end of an incisive counter-attack.

It proved to the the winning goal, and Carlo Ancelotti’s side will now face the winner of Thursday’s semi-final between Atlético Madrid and Athletic Club in Sunday’s final
