La Liga outfit Real Betis have on Tuesday confirmed the extent of the injury suffered by frontman Cédric Bakambu.
And the news will no doubt come as a blow to club and player alike.
Frontman Bakambu, for his part, was afforded a starting berth in Real Betis’ El Gran Derbi showdown with arch rivals Sevilla over the weekend.
Early in the 2nd-half, however, after being set through on goal, the 33-year-old suddenly pulled up with what appeared to be a muscular problem.
After being tended to by the Verdiblancos’ medical staff, Bakambu was subsequently stretchered from the field of play at the Estadio Benito Villamarín.
And ensuing medical tests have given rise to less-than-positive results.
As per an official statement across Betis’ website and social media platforms, Bakambu – who has endured a tough time of things on the injury front since his January arrival at the club – has picked up a quad problem:
‘The tests carried out on our player Cédric Bakambu have determined that the forward suffers a proximal injury to the tendon of the right rectus femoris muscle. After a first phase of rest and initial conservative treatment, a new evaluation will be carried out to make a definitive therapeutic decision.’
The statement adds that Bakambu could yet be forced under the knife, with Mundo Deportivo pointing towards the DR Congo international’s season as being over.
