An insider claim has emerged on Rangers boss Giovanni van Bronckhorst, regarding his involvement against Hibernian on Sunday.

What’s the talk?

BT Sport journalist/host Darrell Currie claimed that the Dutchman was able to go and speak to the players and have an input ahead of the clash, but opted against doing so.

He stated that van Bronckhorst’s work permit arrived in time for him to meet the team, in a conversation with Derek McInnes pre-game.

Speaking on Premier Sports 1, via Ibrox news, Currie said:

“I believe he now has his work permit, Derek.

“He’s not going to address the team, I’m told he’s going to stay in the stands.

“Do you think that’s the right decision because officially now, he could go down, say hello, see them? But he’s not going to.”

McInnes simply replied: “It doesn’t really matter if it’s the right decision, it’s his decision.”

Rangers fans will surely be fuming with this decision from van Bronckhorst after the club ended up losing the game 3-1, failing to make the final against Celtic. It was a flat performance from the Gers and one that could have benefitted from the Dutchman boosting their motivation levels ahead of the match.

Centre-back Connor Goldson admitted after the game that the players needed a spark to improve their displays. He said: “We know that the new manager was here today and you would hope that players would want to impress but after that performance we need a change. We need a spark as I don’t want to say this but I feel that we have lost a bit of hunger.”

Who scored more goals for Newcastle? An easy one to start...

Alan Shearer Shola Ameobi

Irrespective of whether or not the players should need a spark to play well in a League Cup semi-final, van Bronckhorst could have given the squad an extra lift by speaking to them before the match. Even if it was as little as heading down to the dressing room to give them some encouragement and words of advice, it could have made a difference in the players’ minds.

It was a chance for him to make an immediate, positive, impact on the side. Instead, he watched on from the stands as a disappointing display ensued and Rangers were sent packing from the League Cup, leaving Hibernian and Celtic to battle it out in the final.

This is why Gers fans will be fuming with his decision, as he had an opportunity to go and make a difference but decided not to interfere. This is not a great start to his reign.
