Queens Park Rangers have had a poor season overall, but the upturn since the appointment of Marti Cifuentes has given the fans hope ahead of next season.

The R’s started the campaign with Gareth Ainsworth in charge, but he was sacked at the end of October having picked up just two points in his last eight games.

QPR then went and headhunted Cifuentes, who was doing a brilliant job at Swedish side Hammarby. Since his arrival at the end of October, QPR have now managed to drag themselves out of the relegation zone and are just one win away from securing their safety.

With that in mind, QPR looks set to be a competitive team from the start of next season under Cifuentes, but with money tight, some long-serving players may leave the club.

Kakay failing to make the QPR squad

One of the players whose future is in major doubt at Loftus Road is right-back Osman Kakay.

He has made 26 league appearances this season, but after starting the season as a regular under Ainsworth, Jimmy Dunne has now emerged as the first-choice right-back under Cifuentes, with Reggie Cannon and Aaron Drewe as backups.

FLW's QPR fan pundit Louis Moir has said that Kakay should leave the club in the summer, saying that he is not good enough to play in the Championship.

Louis said: “It’s quite nice to have a manager who obviously does not rate Kakay, I have been saying for a long time now that he has probably been at the club way too long, every manager has given him a chance, which I suppose is fair enough because every manager needs to judge for themselves. But it was so blatant that Kakay is not a Championship player.

“He is probably a League One right-back at best, and we have seen in the last few months under Marti, Kakay has not been even getting on the bench. He has been dropped into the B team, playing a few games for them. Even when you would think he might make the bench for a couple of weeks, even Aaron Drewe was on the bench instead of him, so it shows that Marti obviously does not rate him.

“He is out of contract in the summer so I think it is finally time that he departs the club. He has had his good games, which is a rare occurrence for him. He has been at the club since he was eight years of age, I think if that was not the case he would have been gone a long time ago.

“I have not rated him since he has come anywhere near the first team, and I think he needs to leave the club. Which he probably will now, he is out of contract, and he could potentially get snapped up by a lower-table Championship club."

Kakay’s QPR departure is very likely

Kakay is out of contract at the end of the season and his lack of game time since Cifuentes’ arrival is very telling as to where his future lies.

The Sierra Leone international has not featured for the club in the league since December, having not featured in a Championship match-day squad since New Year’s Day.

When Cifuentes was quizzed about why Kakay was not being included in the squad, he said that competition for places was the main issue, saying: “Well, when you look at the squad and the selections over the last weeks, it’s obviously the case.

“It’s nothing against Ozzie. I will not be the one judging what he has done at the club for many years. He has been proving that he is a very competent player.

“But obviously we are in a situation where there is a lot of competition to get into the squad at right full-back.”
