There has been a lot of speculation surrounding Rangers in recent weeks and it shows no sign of slowing down. Supporters are watching closely as the club continues to work behind the scenes with a mix of optimism and caution. The summer window has already thrown up plenty of headlines and that trend looks set to continue as Ibrox chiefs weigh up what could be two of the most lucrative sales in recent history. The decisions made in the coming days and weeks may define not just the season ahead but the shape of Rangers’ ambitions altogether.
Rangers are currently staring at the potential of bringing in around £50M if both Nico Raskin and Hamza Igamane are sold. This story first broke in relation to Igamane with a French suitor agreeing terms for the Moroccan forward. At the same time Raskin has been linked with major Premier League and European sides, which has prompted strong rumours about an impending deal worth up to £30M for the Belgian midfielder. That kind of figure is absolutely extraordinary by Rangers’ standards and it is easy to understand why the board might be tempted to cash in.
The only problem with this plan is simple. If both players leave Ibrox this summer the squad could be left short of real alpha talent. While Raskin was not always consistent his quality on the ball and ability to drive the midfield forward made him one of the few players who could take control in big matches. Hamza is still an unknown quantity but he has shown signs of class and goalscoring instinct that Rangers have lacked since the days of peak Alfredo Morelos. If both are sold and not replaced by similar or better calibre, the side could be left looking light in key positions. Reports already suggest the deals are progressing.
That said this is also a major opportunity. Rangers have not always made the most of income from sales in the past but £50M gives a lot of scope to build properly. With the right reinvestment this could be transformative. The club must now walk the fine line between financial gain and sporting power. Transfermarkt gives the clearest insight into Raskin’s rise and how valuable he could yet be.
