Rangers’ squad dramatically loses value amid slump | OneFootball

While market value is not always the be all and end all, there’s no question Rangers’ squad has lost a tonne of value the past few seasons.

Transfermarkt is generally the most reliable indicator of relative value of players, and to simplify it all, Rangers’ full squad, including those on loan, is a modest £78M, while Celtic’s hits the £120M mark.

Rangers’ most valuable financial asset isn’t even our own player, with Czechia’s Vaclav Cerny weighing in at the highest number of £7M.

After him it’s £6.5M for Tavernier and Nico Raskin, then £6M for Danilo.

Of course these numbers are a bit redundant in a sense – when Rangers faced Kyiv, their squad was around £75M (and still is), but Rangers’ squad at the time was slightly heavier because Todd Cantwell was still a registered Rangers player. And Kyiv still won anyway.

But this is a bit moot.

The real point is market value and what you can sell for, and there’s no doubt Celtic have done a colossally better job in the summer of selling players for big money, while Rangers have only managed to get £2.5M for Connor Goldson, a loan with £2M obligation on Jose Cifuentes, and the £1.5M (if we go with transfermarkt’s numbers) for Sam Lammers. That’s £4M rising to £6M with Cifu. Not much.

If we go back a few seasons we were filled with major assets:

Ryan Kent, Alfredo Morelos, Borna Barisic, Joe Aribo, Calvin Bassey, Nathan Patterson, John Lundstram, Cantwell, Glen Kamara – the squad just clearly had more quality than it does now. Plenty of them were well over £10M in market value.

Rangers do have players today of some value, but no assets.

And that’s a big problem – we have no asset players at all now. Some that we rate higher than others but Rangers lack the core of big-number players who form our backbone.

That lot across the city have/had Vickers, O’Riley and Kyogo/Maeda – three or four players worth big money who would attract big bids.

We just don’t have that, and while this summer’s project was about signing young players we can turn into assets, for the time being it means the club in general is rather in limbo.

There just aren’t anywhere near enough great valuable players at Rangers.
