The top five goal scorers in 2024: Haaland pipped by surprise bagsman | OneFootball

Erling Haaland is one of the top goal scorers in 2024, a fact that will shock absolutely nobody, but it may surprise some to find that he is not number one.

The Manchester City forward was the leading bagsman in 2023 with 44 goals and he could well surpass that tally by the end of this year given how well he’s started the season.

There is one man who currently leads him by five goals – and it’s not Kylian Mbappe or Harry Kane.

5. Luuk de Jong (PSV Eindhoven) – 23 goals

You remember Luuk de Jong, don’t you? Spent six months on loan with Newcastle United a decade ago and scored precisely zero goals in 12 appearances. Well, he’s 34-years-old now and can’t stop banging in the goals.

The former Barcelona frontman has scored 60 goals in 93 games since rejoining PSV in 2022. The Dutchman scored 29 goals and made 15 assists last season to lead the club to Eredivisie glory last season.

4. Harry Kane (Bayern Munich) – 24 goals

The England striker was never better last season, scoring 44 goals for Bayern Munich. It’s the most anyone has ever bagged in a debut Bundesliga campaign, and a personal best for a single season. Still, no trophy. The gods have a sick sense of humour (and we’re all laughing along).

3. Kylian Mbappe (PSG/Real Madrid) – 27 goals

Just the 44 goals for Kylian Mbappé last season, which included a hat-trick against a sixth-tier side in the French Cup in January. He’s already off to a good start at Real Madrid, with four goals in his first six games.

2. Erling Haaland (Man City) – 28 goals

Two hat-tricks and nine goals so far for Erling Haaland. And we’re only four games in. Not half bad for the son of a burly, workmanlike midfielder. The Norwegian is currently on pace for 85 goals this season if he keeps up his current rate of goal scoring.

1. Viktor Gyokeres (Sporting) – 33 goals

Premier League clubs must be kicking themselves. Viktor Gyokeres was linked with a number of mid-table teams when his time at Coventry City was coming to an end last summer. They all passed on him and Sporting Clube de Portugal picked up one of the most lethal strikers in Europe.

The Swede scored 29 goals last season to power the Portuguese outfit to the league title. He’s started this term with eight goals already and looking full value for that £85m release clause.
