Rangers have had a bid rejected for Standard Liege midfielder Nicolas Raskin, according to Football Scotland.
However, the Light Blues remain keen on the 21-year-old Belgian and talks are ongoing between both clubs.
Raskin has fallen out with Standard manager Ronny Deila and is currently training with the youth team.
Rangers sense an opportunity but have been told their first offer is not enough to get a deal done.
Gers manager Michael Beale wants solid additions to his ranks before the month ends.
The Ibrox club are nine points behind Scottish Premiership leaders Celtic in the league table after 22 games.
They need to bolster their squad to boost their chances of challenging the Hoops for the title.
Celtic and Rangers will square off in the final of the Scottish League Cup next month, and having Raskin available could go a long way.
He blew Beale away when Standard and the Gers played in the second leg of their Europa League group game in December 2020.
The Belgian left a lasting impression on the then Light Blues assistant manager at the time, and it is not a surprise that the club are now after him.
Raskin is out of contract in the summer and Rangers will face fierce competition for his signature once he becomes a free agent.
This month is their best chance to land the Belgium youth international.
Raskin has bagged one goal and four assists in 17 Jupiler Pro League games this term.
He is undoubtedly capable of improving Rangers’ midfield, given his superb abilities.
The Teddy Bears have snapped up Todd Cantwell as their first signing of the January transfer window.
They want to land more players, and getting the Standard ace would be noteworthy.
