Rangers have just 8 days left to sort out squad & transfers

Article image:Rangers have just 8 days left to sort out squad & transfers

As alluded to in our last piece, Rangers are running out of time to sell Todd Cantwell, but of course the problem runs deeper than just that.

There are just 8 full days left on the Scottish/British/European transfer window meaning any deals to sell players that are surplus have just barely over a week to conclude (notwithstanding clubs outside of UEFA).

From what we understand, Cantwell, Tom Lawrence, Kieran Dowell, Adam Devine, Ianis Hagi, Leon King, Alex Lowry, Rabbi Matondo, Ben Davies and one or two others have been told to find other clubs, or outright want to leave on their own, but nothing has materialised in terms of shifting this dead wood off our squad.

Cantwell is getting £25K, Lawrence £22K, Dowell £8K, Devine £3K, Hagi £22K, King £5K, Lowry £3K, Matondo £30K, Davies £30K and one or two more.

That’s in the region of about £150,000pw wasting away while Rangers can’t ship it out.

This is a real problem.

Rangers could be suffering the very real possibility of being lumbered with £150,000pw salaries of players that Philippe Clement doesn’t want.

That’s potentially around 10+ players on the payroll that we need off it, because while we want a big squad, around 30+ players, and currently it’s about 29 and at least a third of them aren’t wanted.

Add to that the continuing injury issues for the likes of Cortes, Raskin, Balogun, Wright, Propper, Ridvan and Sterling’s wrist strapping, not to mention the fact Nsiala, Danilo and Igamane ‘aren’t ready’, and Rangers’ senior squad choice is barely 15.

Butland, Kelly, Tavernier, Souttar, Davies, Jefte, Fraser, Barron, Diomande, McCausland, Cerny and Dessers are the only players the club seems to have fit, ready and actually wants to keep.

The rest are either injured, unfit, frozen out, unwanted, or surplus but to make a matchday squad they’re still having to be used.

And we have barely 8 or 9 days of this window left to make serious changes.

There has been some work done this window, lots of departures and quite a few signings, but clearly the squad is a considerable level off where it needs to be.

We don’t think that will change much before September 1st.
