Ralf Rangnick’s reign at Manchester United got off to a flying start after the Red Devils beat Crystal Palace 1-0 during Sunday afternoon’s Premier League encounter.

Despite being in charge for just a couple of days, the German, who is expected to implement his trademark brand of football, which is centred around a team pressing high, could not have hoped for a better performance during his first match in the Old Trafford dugout.

Rangnick named an unchanged team to the side that faced Arsenal earlier in the week for Michael Carrick’s final game in charge, which included an attacking trio of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and star man Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, despite the firepower on offer up the top of the pitch, the Red Devils’ winning goal came from an unlikely source.

Defensive midfielder Fred found himself on the edge of the Eagles’ area late on in the second half and after unleashing a superb chipped long-range effort.

Speaking after the game, Rangnick revealed what his reaction was when his Brazilian’s superb effort found the back of the net.

“I had to ask my assistant coach if that was Fred’s right foot,” the German tactician told BBC Sport. “I thought he could only shoot with his left. I’m happy for him.

“It’s always easier to build on things after you’re successful. We must produce further clean sheets and get better at creating chances for our attack.

“Overall I was very pleased with the way we played today.”
