Television pundit Nedum Onuoha says that Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips should avoid a return to Leeds United.

The 28-year-old started his career at the Yorkshire side, where he went to make over 230 senior appearances with 14 goals to his name.

He joined City in 2022 in a deal worth around £45 million but the move didn’t work out for him.

The defensive midfielder struggled for opportunities under Pep Guardiola, and the club sent him on loan to West Ham United in January.

But he has failed to reignite his career at the London Stadium, making costly mistakes and struggling for form.

With West Ham very unlikely to make his loan move permanent, there are suggestions that the England international could return to Elland Road.

However, former Manchester City defender Nedum Onuoha feels Phillips shouldn’t seek a return to Leeds in the summer.

Speaking on ESPN, Onuoha said: “I am going to say no. Overall, I am of the mentality to never really go back.

“Even though he might have a chance to play more at Man City next year, I just don’t think going Leeds would necessarily be the best thing for him.

“He could have that home bond or that home connection, but I think he is a player who could play to a higher standard and a tem than to one who would be fighting relegation next season.”

Nedum Onuoha’s comments suggest that Leeds are actually interested in signing Phillips, which is very likely not the case.

The 28-year-old is currently short of confidence and greatly struggling for form.

The Whites are very close to securing Premier League promotion and they would want younger and more quality players than Phillips to ensure they stay in the English top-flight.
