Leicester City’s Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall picked up on Georginio Rutter’s previous claim that Leeds United were the best team in the league following the Foxes' promotion to the Premier League.

Leicester City win promotion to the Premier League

After an incredible first few months of the campaign, it seemed as though promotion would be a formality for Leicester, and there was even talk about whether they would beat Reading’s record points total at this level.

However, a wobble in the past two months or so made it a tense period for the Midlands outfit, but Enzo Maresca’s side held their nerve, with back-to-back victories in the previous seven days putting them on the cusp of a top-flight return.

As it transpired, Leicester would go up without kicking a ball, as QPR’s emphatic 4-0 success over Leeds on Friday night meant the party could start for the Foxes.

One of the stumbles Leicester came back in February, when they were beaten 3-1 by the Whites at Elland Road in a dramatic game.

It’s fair to say Maresca’s men didn’t have the rub of the green when it came to the refereeing decisions, and the defeat was a big one in the promotion race, as it allowed Leeds to close the gap to six points.

Speaking after the win, which was sealed by three late goals, Leeds attacker Rutter claimed ‘we are the best team I think’.

A clip of that was shared on social media following Leeds’ loss, and it was picked up by Dewsbury-Hall, who replied with the ‘thinking face’ emoji, much to the delight of the Leicester fans.

Whilst Leicester technically need four points to win the title as it stands, they can’t be caught by Leeds, who trail them by four points with one game to go.

Leicester City showed character to seal promotion

There was a lot of noise following that defeat at Elland Road, and a few poor results after, suggesting that Leicester may bottle it during the run-in, and you have to say that Leeds’ form for the first few months of 2024 was outstanding.

So, you can understand why Rutter was in a jubilant mood after the win, and he was right to be bullish about their ability, but ultimately it’s Leicester who have shown they’re better than Leeds over the course of the season.

The pressure has been there in the past few weeks, particularly after the loss at Plymouth, but the players have shown real character, with Dewsbury-Hall key to their success. Meanwhile, it seems to have impacted Rutter and Leeds, who have collected just eight points from their last seven games.

The Foxes found a way to win a tough game against West Brom, before producing a fantastic team display to hammer Southampton.

Of course, the main objective of promotion is achieved, but Maresca and the players will want the title, and they could potentially wrap it up at Preston on Monday night if Ipswich don’t beat Hull City this evening.
