“What is that question? Honestly, do you understand football?” Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi lept to the defence of manager Luis Enrique, whose future at the club was the subject of a question from a journalist in the wake of Les Parisiens’ UEFA Champions League elimination on Tuesday.

A 1-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund at the Parc des Princes saw PSG crash out of the Champions League (2-0 agg.) at the semi-final stage. Despite the major disappointment, having got within touching distance of a second final in four years, Luis Enrique’s future at the club is far from being a topic of conversation. Al-Khelaifi and the rest of PSG’s hierarchy have continued to support the Spanish manager in this season of transition, during which expectations have been exceeded.

As well as publically defending his manager from criticism, Le Parisien report that Al-Khelaifi is planning on extending Luis Enrique’s contract. The Spaniard, who arrived in the summer, has a contract that runs until 2025. With full focus on the Champions League, there were no discussions of an extension but now that the club are out of the competition, the relevant parties will now sit down to discuss the possibility of an extension.

If there is no delay in the talks between Luis Enrique and PSG’s hierarchy, a contract extension announcement could come shortly after Les Parisiens’ Coupe de France final against Olympique Lyonnais, which takes place on 25th May.
