Sørloth shines as Madrid stunned

Scorers: Sørloth 39′, 48′, 52′, 56′; Güler 14′, 45+2′, Joselu 30′, Vazquez 40′

The LaLiga champions were stunned on Sunday as one Villarreal star dominated the pitch in an eight-goal thriller.

It looked like Real Madrid were in cruise control after half an hour when starlet Arda Güler and the ever-reliable Joselu both found the net.

Alexander Sørloth pulled one back with a thumping header and boy, he did not stop there!

Lucas Vazquez restored Madrid’s two goal lead by beating goalkeeper Filip Jörgensen on the right and Güler’s brace made it six goals from six shots on target for Turkey international.

However, Sørloth scored a second-half hat-trick to stun the visitors.

Another header, a slick shot under Andryi Lunin and then a blasted effort into the far bottom right corner made it four goals in 17 minutes.

The last to do so against Madrid was Taty Castellanos in 2023, and the current Pichichi leader (23 goals) could have had a fifth.

Carlo Ancelotti will be unimpressed with his defence heading into the Champions League final while eighth-place Villarreal will remember this result for a while!

Barcelona dig deep against Rayo

Scorer: Lewandowski 3′, Pedri 72′, 75′

Barcelona made it three league wins in a row after treating home fans to a victory over Rayo Vallecano.

The hosts largely dominated possession of the ball and struck within the blink of an eye when Lamine Yamal teed up Robert Lewandowski and the Poland international volleyed home.

Meanwhile, the Spaniard notched his 10th assist of the season the same day he became the youngest Barcelona player to reach 50 official games.

Rayo Vallecano threatened to draw level but attempts from Pathé Ciss, Álvaro García Rivera and Isi Palazón all fell short.

Coming out after the break the match continued to be a one-goal game and Xavi looked to his bench to ease the pressure.

Pedri then proved why he is one of Barcelona’s most prized possessions with two goals in three minutes.

The Spaniard first volleyed home in off the crossbar before staying calm, cool and collected on a breakaway to beat Stole Dimitrievski again.

Atleti suffer shocker at home

Scorers: Morata 55′; Garcia 26′, 64′, Oroz 52′, Torro 88′

The Wanda Metropolitano is known to be a fortress in Spain but Osasuna made it their own in a convincing 4-1 win.

Atletico Madrid struggled to register true chances and instead were behind the game.

Raul Garcia redirected the ball home from point-blank range in the box and handed Osasuna the lead at the break.

Almar Oroz then doubled the lead after by tapping another home from close range at the back post.

Alvaro Morata was called off the bench and finished off a counter attack to halve the deficit but the visitors still prevailed.

A stunning team-move from Osasuna dizzied Atleti defenders before Garcia secured a brace by striking into the roof of the net.

Lucas Torro later added a fourth to pile on the misery during Atleti’s final home match of the season as 11th-place Osasuna returned to winning ways.

Diego Simeone’s side have conceded 3 or more goals in eight home games in LaLiga, three of them from the current season.

Looking at the table, some final positions were also confirmed.

Girona finished 2023-24 third and Atleti fourth.

Athletic Club, Real Sociedad, and Real Betis in Europe.

Meanwhile, Cádiz, Granada and Almería were relegated.
