There was genuine concern for Alexandre Lacazette (32) last night. Having scored the goal that got Olympique Lyonnais back into the game against Stade Brestois, deep in injury time, the former Arsenal forward earned a penalty that gave his side the chance to nick all three points.

However, the manner in which he earned it saw him leave the field on a stretcher. Marco Bizot thundered into Lacazette, with the Dutchman flying knees-first into the Frenchman’s torso. Initially, the penalty was not given but after consultation with VAR, the referee pointed to the spot and handed Bizot a yellow card.

However, Lacazette, the designated penalty taker, was in no fit state to take the proceeding spot-kick. Instead, the task fell to former Arsenal teammate Ainsley Maitland-Niles, who sent Bizot the wrong way to secure a memorable 4-3 win. “It was sad to see him stretchered off tonight and so I knew I had to score that penalty, especially for him,” said Maitland-Niles post-match.

RMC Sport have now provided a positive update on Lacazette’s condition. According to the publication, the Lyon captain is expected to be fit to face Paris Saint-Germain next Sunday, after he has observed a period of rest. Lacazette therefore looks to have avoided any serious injury, despite the dramatic collision.
