Foster was dismissed in April after overseeing a poor run of form that had the team under threat of relegation straight back to League One.

The coach oversaw just 17 games in charge of the club before being replaced ahead of the run-in.

Neil Dewsnip and Kevin Nancekivell oversaw the end of the campaign, with the search now underway for a long-term appointment.

Rosenior spent last season in charge at Hull City, but was dismissed after the final game of the campaign.

The Tigers’ coincidentally lost to Plymouth in the last fixture of the regular campaign, which cost the Yorkshire outfit a chance to compete for a play-off place.

The defeat meant Hull finished seventh in the table, three points behind sixth place Norwich City.

The 1-0 victory also ensured Plymouth remained in the second division for another 12 months, finishing one point clear of 22nd Birmingham City.

Rosenior is now on the club’s radar as a potential replacement to Foster, with Bayern Munich coach Anthony Barry also considered a leading candidate for the vacancy.

Barry has worked under Thomas Tuchel at both Bayern and Chelsea, and also coached as an assistant to the Ireland national team.

He has earned a positive reputation within the game for his tactical acumen, and could be an interesting left-field choice to take over at Home Park.

Barry has yet to take the reins of a first team squad as the main manager, but this could be his opportunity to do so.

Plymouth are planning to take their time before making an official decision on the next coach, with there being plenty of time until the players return for pre-season.

Plymouth’s Championship survival

Plymouth’s survival in the Championship means they will be able to use a wider net to search for their next appointment.

Someone like Rosenior would’ve been very difficult to convince to take on the role if they had suffered relegation to League One.

Victory over his Hull side on the final day proved crucial to their survival, as the gap to Birmingham was just one point.

Plymouth will now be planning for their second year in the Championship, after gaining promotion as League One champions under Steven Schumacher in 2023.

Rosenior would be a solid appointment for Plymouth

Rosenior earned a lot of plaudits for his work at Hull, turning their form around from relegation battlers to promotion contenders in 18 months or so.

The 39-year-old was backed well by the owners, but his results speak for themselves, guiding the Tigers to 15th and seventh place finishes.

He would be a steady pair of hands that could take Plymouth away from the relegation fight, which would be great for the club.

Barry is another interesting choice, and is someone with a growing reputation in the game.

He would perhaps be the more exciting but riskier unknown appointment.
