With hundreds of contracts expiring across the EFL in the next month, plenty of players will be available for snapping up ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, and Plymouth Argyle will be as eager as any to get their hands on new recruits.

The Pilgrims maintained their status as a Championship club with victory on the final day of the previous campaign, and will be looking to add to their ranks in the hope of finishing higher up the table in the upcoming year.

With plenty of comings and goings expected at Home Park in the next few months - in the dugout as well as on the pitch - the Devon side will have already earmarked a number of potential freebies who could freshen up the dressing room during the off-season.

Here we take a look at five potential recruits that Argyle should be mulling over, with extra firepower a key target area for a side that struggled to find the net in the second half of last season.

Ruel Sotiriou

Ruel Sotiriou has been goalgetter-in-chief for Leyton Orient over the past few seasons for Leyton Orient, with the Cyprus international netting 11 times in the third tier in the previous campaign.

Having come up through the ranks at Brisbane Road, the forward's natural instinct in front of goal has seen him bag on a regular basis for Richie Wellens’ side as they made their way up from League Two, and has looked comfortable taking the next step up the EFL pyramid.

With much of Argyle’s goalscoring efforts coming through Ryan Hardie or Morgan Whittaker last season, the Greens could do with another out-and-out striker in the squad, with Ben Waine’s efforts from the bench hardly setting the world alight.

A player like Sotiriou has the tenacity and footballing brain to be in the right place at the right time, and make the most of any opportunities that come his way, and being just 23 years of age, he has plenty of time to develop into a regular Football League marksman.

The forward has been offered a new deal with the O’s but is yet to sign anything as it stands, meaning Argyle could swoop to seal a deal for the Cypriot before it’s too late, and provide competition for Hardie at the centre of attack.

Cyrus Christie

After experimenting with a back four throughout the season, director of football Neil Dewsnip reverted to the tried and tested back five that had served Argyle so well in the past during his stint in charge of the team at the tail end of the season.

With three domineering centre backs patrolling the backline, the likes of Joe Edwards, Bali Mumba or Mickel Miller could bomb up and down the flanks from the wing-back position; providing the width to stretch the opposition.

With Miller yet to sign the new deal offered by the Devon side this summer, there could be a spot available in the wing-back role at Home Park this summer, and a player like Cyrus Christie could fit the bill perfectly after his release from Hull City.

The former Liverpool man has made a living from streaking up and down the wing during his time in the EFL, and despite being 31 years of age, could be a great addition for his experience at nous at the level.

Whether it was Steven Schumacher, Ian Foster or Dewsnip calling the shots for the Pilgrims last season, the wing-backs were constantly rotated to allow fresh legs to put in the hard yards charging up and down the flanks - that could allow Christie the chance to make an impact if called upon.

Jonathan Hogg

He may have been offered an extension to his current deal at Huddersfield Town, but as it stands, Jonathan Hogg will be a free agent by the time July comes along.

The chance to sign a player with the experience that the midfielder possesses should be one that Argyle consider this summer, with his bite in the tackle and willingness to win possession back something the Greens could do with in the middle of the park.

Along with January recruit Adam Forshaw, both players could play a role in being the elder statesman in the engine room for the Pilgrims next season, with that added Championship experience making all the difference when push comes to shove.

He may be 35-years-old, but the former Watford man played 35 games in all competitions for the Terriers last season, and could still do a job patrolling the midfield if he were to move to Home Park this summer after over 350 games for the Yorkshire side.

If any Argyle fans find his age off-putting, you only have to look at crowd favourite Lilian Nalis as an example of a player in the latter stages of their career calling the shots while playing for the Greens in the Championship, and Hogg could offer just as much, even if it was just on a one-year deal.

Sam Sherring

Sam Sherring’s stock has been rising with every season that he plays in the EFL, with the Northampton Town man excelling as part of the Cobblers’ backline in the previous League One campaign.

With 35 interceptions, 165 clearances and 30 tackles to his name for the Sixfields side last season, the centre back has gained a reputation for himself as being a rock-solid performer for Jon Brady’s side, as he made the step up to League One with ease.

Town are eager to keep the defender past this summer, but with his current deal with the club elapsing next month, there will no doubt be plenty of clubs interested in his signature ahead of the 24/25 campaign.

One of those should be Argyle, especially with Brendan Galloway potentially leaving the club at the end of June, with the Zimbabwe international yet to commit his future to the club after being offered a new deal.

With Tottenham Hotspur loanee Ash Phillips returning to his parent club as well, the Greens will be looking to bring in a couple of defenders over the next few months, with Lewis Gibson, Dan Scarr and Julio Pleguezuelo the three recognised centre backs at the club.

Someone like Sherring could help fill the void left this summer, with his defensive attributes likely to complement the three defenders already at the club, with his ability with the ball at his feet also a major selling point.

Arkell Jude-Boyd

It is no secret that Arkell Jude-Boyd has been interesting the powers that be at Home Park recently, with the right-back set to leave Queens Park Rangers when his contract expires this month.

Both Rotherham United and Argyle are said to be interested in the defender, who impressed while on loan with Devon neighbours Torquay United earlier this season.

The 21-year-old was named the Gulls' Young Player of the Season despite only joining in January, as he scored six goals in 17 appearances while at Plainmoor as United staved off any relegation fears in the National League South.

Although Rangers are unwilling to offer him a new deal at Loftus Road, Argyle’s usage of rip-roaring wing-backs could mean a move for Jude-Boyd is on the cards, with the young defender’s profile looking like a perfect fit for the Greens’ backline.

With an emphasis on getting forward as much as possible, the right-back would be a great addition both in and out of possession for the campaign ahead, and Argyle need to act quick to make him there’s with other EFL clubs circling.
