Picking Chelsea’s front 3 based on stats alone
the Chelsea News
Choosing a front 3 for a football team has a lot of variables – there’s form, fitness, the chemistry between them, the balance of the team.
If you were just going to pick the most productive front three at Chelsea though, who would it be?
The most simple way to break it down is by combining expected goals and expected assists, not including penalties, and dividing by 90 minutes to account for those who have played more or less.
Sliced like that, Timo Werner would be he first name on the team sheet. His 0.85 non penalty goals and assists per 90 minutes dominated everyone else in the squad. Up next would be Hakim Ziyech, way down on 0.61. Leading the line would be Romelu Lukaku with 0.59.
We haven’t seen that combination much, perhaps not at all – but it’s certainly something for Thomas Tuchel to consider going forward. The three could complement each other pretty well – and they’re certainly all productive.
