Manchester United are expected to accelerate their attempts to find a new goalkeeper, and John Victor is seemingly at the top of the wishlist.

As reported in recent hours, the Red Devils lost the services of Andre Onana to injury. The Cameroonian hurt his hamstring, and early reports believe he could be out for four to six weeks.

Therefore, the 29-year-old will miss Man Utd’s entire pre-season, and is even in doubt for the Premier League opener against Arsenal on August 17.

In recent weeks, it has been reported that Ruben Amorim and his staff are willing to entrust Onana with the No.1 role once more, despite his shaky displays over the past two campaigns. Nevertheless, this new development could prompt INEOS to take action, even though the former Inter Milan and Ajax star may only skip a few official fixtures.

According to Goal Brazil (via Centre Devils), the Premier League giants will accelerate their attempts to sign Botafogo’s John.

The source also adds that the Brazilian giants may have already resigned to losing their reliable custodian at some stage this summer, so they have already been searching the market for a replacement.

The source claims they may have found their man in Matheus Mendes who is on Atlético-MG’s books, but is currently on loan to América-MG.

John’s rise to prominence

John started his career at Santos, but failed to leave his mark at his original club. After loan spells at Internacional and Real Valladolid, he joined Botafogo last year on a deal worth circa £1 million, and he’s been enjoying a sudden rise to stardom ever since. This is also depicted by his soaring market value, which has now exceeded €8 million, according to Transfermarkt.

The 29-year-old has made 28 appearances this season, registering 10 clean sheets and conceding 25 goals. He is tied to Botafogo with a contract until December 2028.

While the links have intensified in recent days, it should be noted that John has been on Man Utd’s radar at least since January.
