In a recent segment on Record in Hora (via Leonino), Portuguese journalist Pedro Sousa mentioned that Manchester United are willing to meet Sporting’s asking price for Viktor Gyokeres this summer. Sousa said,
“There are clubs that want to pay 70M+10M. Manchester (United) would pay the 70M+10M tomorrow, but I do not know if he (Frederico Varandas) still answers the phone to Ruben Amorim.”
Gyokeres had a brilliant season at Sporting recently as he banged in plenty of important goals for them in Liga Portugal. The Swedish talent was involved in 52 matches for the Portuguese outfit in the previous campaign, scoring 54 goals and grabbing 13 assists in multiple competitions.
The 27-year-old gave a good account of himself in the opposition half as he managed to average 4.08 shots per 90 minutes in the Liga Portugal. He kept 52% of his attempts on target. However, Gyokeres needs to improve his ball distribution after making 71.4% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Portuguese football (stats via fbref.com).
His current contract at the Portuguese club will run out in the summer of 2028. Therefore, Man United would have no choice but to meet Sporting’s demands if they are to stand a chance of luring him to Old Trafford this off-season.

Gyokeres is proficient at finding some space for himself to get some strikes in at goal and usually generates a lot of power with his shot attempts. He has proven himself to be a capable finisher in the final third and can also contribute by picking up his fair share of assists up top.
The Sweden international is usually quite clever with his movements in and around the opponent’s penalty area. However, it remains to be seen whether he can maintain his good form in the Premier League if Man United manage to bring him on board in this summer transfer period.
We can expect Gyokeres to bring more firepower to Ruben Amorim’s attack. He would even serve as an upgrade over Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee at the Mancunian club.
At 27, Gyokeres is playing in his prime. Hence, Amorim should consider trying everything in his power to get a deal over the line for the Swedish striker before the end of this summer transfer window.
