Arthur Theate (24) has joined Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt from Stade Rennais, both clubs have confirmed. The Belgium international centre-back has joined on a season-long loan that includes the option to make the move permanent.
It is thought that the purchase option is worth around €18m. Rennes initially purchased Theate from Bologna two years ago in a €19m deal. The KRC Genk youth product went to feature 82 times for the Ligue 1 side, logging eight goals and one assist. Theate was under contract with Rennes until 2027.
Frankfurt were in the market for a centre-back following Willian Pacho’s (22) €45m move to Paris Saint-Germain. Theate was previously linked with a move to Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Ittihad but infighting at the club derailed the Belgian’s transfer. With Dino Toppmöller’s Eintracht, Theate will play in the UEFA Europa League group stage courtesy of Frankfurt’s sixth-place finish in the last Bundesliga campaign. As for Rennes, Julien Stéphan’s side will kick off their Ligue 1 campaign this Sunday evening against Olympique Lyonnais.
