Sheffield Wednesday host Shrewsbury Town this weekend as the Owls look to inflict further pressure on the top-two positions in the second tier.

The Shropshire side are without a league win in their last five, although all three defeats in that time have been by a single goal.

Sheffield Wednesday have not suffered a defeat at Hillsborough in their last five league games and will be confident that they can continue what has been a positive start to the campaign.

Sharing his thoughts on the importance of Saturday’s fixture against the Shrews, Carlton Palmer told Football League World: “Sheffield Wednesday have won four and drawn two of the last six games.

“In contrast, Shrewsbury, although they’ve been tight games, have won one, lost three and drawn two of their last six games.

“There’s no such thing as a routine game. But it’s a game that Sheffield Wednesday have to win, to keep pace with the leaders Plymouth.

“You’d expect Plymouth to beat Burton who are second from bottom in the division. Ipswich are away at Exeter, which might be a tougher game. Ipswich might drop a point there.

“But like we said, the two of them have been setting a tremendous pace.”

The verdict

As Palmer has mentioned for quite some time, the three front-runners in League One at the moment are setting an exciting pace, with all three teams averaging over 2 ppg thus far.

The Owls have been taking advantage of a run of games that has been comparatively easier to most, and whilst Shrewsbury are in 14th position, they are still a strong side.

Sheffield Wednesday possess a squad full of quality and the competition levels are high, something that keeps them a threat all the way through the 90 minutes.

The points should stay in Yorkshire come Saturday but nothing is guaranteed in the EFL, that is for sure.
