Borussia Mönchengladbach have announced that sporting director Nils Schmadtke has left the club by mutual consent and has been replaced by David Zibung.

On his decision to leave the club, Schmadtke said: “I have been to Borussia for the third time and do not want to miss any of these experiences. The bottom line, however, is that it did not fit 100 percent for both sides in this constellation. Therefore, a separation is the best decision for everyone.” The son of Jörg, Nils only joined Gladbach from Wolfsburg last summer to help Roland Virkus with the squad rebuilding. Rheinische Post suggests that the reason for the departure is that Schmadtke was slowly receiving less and less influence in squad planning.

Virkus also gave his thoughts on the decision to part ways: “We sat down after the season and, after intensive discussions, we came to the conclusion together to end the cooperation,  But we are separating in the good. We thank Nils for his commitment and the work he has done and wish him all the best for his professional and private future.”

Schmadtzke will now be replaced by David Zibung. The former keeper was working as a scout for Swiss side Luzern and will now become ‘Sports Coordinator’. Zibung has a very good relationship with head coach Gerardo Seoane as the pair worked together at Luzern both as players as well as player and coach.

The arrival of Zibung will also strengthen the position of Seoane, who led the club to one of their worst seasons in recent memories as they club flirted with the idea of relegation right up until the end of the season. Earlier it was reported that Gladbach will continue with Seoane into the new season, despite his poor first season.
