Newcastle United are considering a move for RB Leipzig centre-forward Benjamin Sesko this summer, according to iNews.
Newcastle want to keep Alexander Isak, but he is reportedly angling for a move, leaving them in a tricky position.
Liverpool and Chelsea are reportedly interested in Isak. The Magpies must sign a new striker to lead the line if their prized asset leaves, and have turned to Sesko.
Sesko bagged 21 goals and six assists in 45 appearances last term in a disappointing campaign for the German side.
The 22-year-old has been tipped to become one of the best strikers of his generation, but he is still developing his game.
While he has shown glimpses of his remarkable talent, he is still far from fulfilling his potential.
Former Leipzig technical director Christopher Vivell told the Bundesliga website that Sesko is a ‘real goalscorer’, but it is debatable whether he is the right man for Newcastle.
The Magpies should move for teammate Lois Openda. His top-end speed, intelligent movement, and pressing energy make him ideal for manager Eddie Howe and his vertical, high-intensity system.
Crucially, Openda thrives running in behind. He is a perfect match for the direct wingers and ball-winners in the Newcastle set-up.
Sesko may offer more hold-up play, but Openda’s proven end-product, off-ball gravity and pressing discipline provide greater value at a lower cost.
He is a ceiling-raiser who could explode again in a more functional attack. Now is the time to buy the dip.
