Newcastle United inconsistent? I think you had better check this out…

On the back of the defeat at Crystal Palace, these past couple of days I keep seeing mentions of how this is ‘proof’ of how inconsistent Newcastle United have been recently.

It got me thinking…

Is this really true, or one of those lazy things that Newcastle United fans (and others) come out with and you end up realising it is just nonsense?

So, I had a look.

This is how the Premier League table looks ahead of the weekend matches (as at Friday 26 April 2024):

So leaving aside the three who are out on their own at the top, I thought I would have a look at the last four months of results for the five clubs who are fourth to eighth in the Premier League.

I looked at the last 17 domestic (Premier League and FA Cup) for the five clubs and this is what I found:

Aston Villa – Played 17 Won 8 Drawn 4 Lost 5

Tottenham – Played 17 Won 9 Drawn 3 Lost 5

Man U – Played 17 Won 10 Drawn 4 Lost 3

Newcastle United – Played 17 Won 9 Drawn 3 Lost 5

West Ham – Played 17 Won 3 Drawn 7 Lost 7

So compared to the clubs around them, Newcastle United have better results these past four months than West Ham and Aston Villa, whilst exactly the same results as Tottenham.

Man U have better results overall BUT their last eight Premier League matches have seen them win only two of them AND they were against relegation battlers Everton and Sheffield United.

Of these other four clubs, Newcastle United have played three of them during recent months, hammering Villa 3-1 away and Spurs 4-0 at home, plus that exhilarating 4-3 victory over West Ham.

Can anybody really say Newcastle United have been ‘inconsistent’ these past four months.

Eddie Howe’s side have only lost five of their 17 games in these past four months and before the defeat at Palace, their only defeats in that time period had been losing home and away to Man City, plus defeats at Arsenal and Chelsea.

For me, inconsistent is winning one week, then losing the next, then repeat. However, it is nine wins and five defeats in these past four months for Newcastle United AND as I outline above, they were all tough games the five that NUFC lost, including against a rejuvenated Palace.

Considering Eddie Howe has week in week out still been missing 10+ first team squad players during this four months period, I think it is a massive achievement to have still done so well, despite having so many key players unavailable. So often, the team simply picking itself.
