Newcastle 2 Tottenham 3- Sunday 17 October 4.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

The perfect start with a goal inside two minutes BUT pretty much all downhill after that…

Ben Cooper:

“After 5 minutes of glory, normal service was resumed.

“An average Spurs team still have good attacking players given the time and space.

“Our hopeless 4-1-4-1 gave them that. Three well taken but stupidly easy goals followed.

“The second half was played out in virtual silence.

“Only Shelvey getting sent off and a comedy own goal worth noting.

“For all the fanfare and pre-match hype, the team is poor and the manager worse.

“Steve Bruce’s thousandth game ending like most of the rest.

“We got beat, we deserved it and we weren’t very good.

“Bruce can shove his thousandth game and his respect.

“He should never have been here, especially this week.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“The magnificent support given to the team wasn’t deserving of such a passive performance.

“Hugely disappointing.

“At least the support was something not seen at SJP for a long time.

“Felt like everything was building to the crescendo of the opener.

“That support won’t last if they continue to serve up that dross. The team could get relegated easily.

“I would even take Pulis tomorrow.”

Billy Miller:

“Great to be back at St James’ but after a good opening few minutes we reverted to type and allowed Tottenham to take control of the game.

“We will also lack organisation and resilience under Bruce.

“He’s had his special day.

“Now please Amanda and Co, don’t let him get to game 1,001.

“We all know we’re going to have to be patient as we rebuild this great club but that patience does not stretch to the manager.”

Dave Punton:

“A new era but some familiar failings as we slid to yet another defeat.

“It was a day that offered a fresh start for the club but here we were also served a very healthy reality check.

“The atmosphere at kick off was worth a goal start and that came through Wilson’s bullet header. Once Spurs got through the gears we couldn’t live with them.

“There a followed a truly terrible Steve Bruce inspired second half showing where they chased shadows.

“And then the cherry on the cake arrived when Shelvey is dismissed for a second booking. Idiotic from him.

“Bruce’s son had told the BBC this weekend that criticism of his dad had been unfair, yet I honestly can’t see how no wins in nine games played doesn’t warrant justified criticism.

“The new owners opted against sacking Bruce. It was frustrating to see some in the media criticise that decision when you can bet your bottom dollar if Staveley had of pulled the trigger they’d probably have said it was shabby treatment.

“After today I cannot see how Bruce can remain as the manager of Newcastle United. It needs fresh ideas. It needs something.

“There was also an awful medical emergency at the game today and it was great to see Tottenham and Newcastle players reacting and getting the defibrillator on quickly.

“As for the big day itself, it was still great to see that we have our club back. Yes, the result was disappointing, but it isworth remembering Mike Ashley no longer owns NUFC. Amen.”

GToon:

“Firstly, I hope the person needing emergency help is ok.

“We have a health service to be proud of and credit to the Spurs players for alerting the ref and trying to get help quickly. Much more important than football.

“To the game: If ever the new owners were in any doubt about the magnitude of the on field task ahead of them that game should be the perfect introduction.

“We were outplayed for 80 minutes by a Spurs side who could easily scored more than 3.

“From that game I believe ASM and Wilson can think they might be in future plans.

“Joelinton tried hard but showed his limitations too.

“The rest of them ranged from non-existent like Longstaff to clueless like the captain.

“And let’s not forget the most dignified human in SJP who is immune from any criticism and should be treated with respect at all times regardless of the performance, the ineffective game plan, the result and of course the league table itself.”

Jamie Smith:

“Memorable day and a balmy atmosphere.

“As expected, soiled a bit by the disorganisation and lack of urgency we’ve come to expect under the current manager.

“A silver lining will surely be the removal of the buffoon in the dug out.

“Yasar al Rumayyan looked buzzing at his raucous reception and I’d expect him to act quick to blame the bloke that spoiled it.

“However, we were well in this game and it’s a chance missed to prevent a disastrous first match under the new owners.

“Looking ahead, we dust worselves off and move forward.”

Paul Patterson:

“From the pre match press conference to the evidence on the pitch, let’s hope the owners have seen enough and start the revolution.

“Taxi for Bruce.”

Nat Seaton:

“We may have HOPE for the future of our club but we were HOPELESS on the pitch today.

“After a brilliant start (oh what a celebration that was!) it became more of the same that we have been subjected to over the last couple of seasons.

“I thought the atmosphere may have carried us longer than the first 15 minutes but reality hit home hard. Totally outplayed for the rest of the game.

“At least Amanda got to feel how it is to celebrate a cracking goal hopefully she will have that feeling many more times to come”
