The pressure has mounted on Adi Hütter, despite the Austrian signing a contract extension at AS Monaco at the start of January. A poor run of form has seen the Principality club knocked out of the Coupe de France, whilst they have also slipped down to fourth in Ligue 1 and their future in the UEFA Champions League hangs in the balance with Hütter’s side set to head to Lisbon with the aim of overturning a one-goal deficit to Benfica.
“When your manager’s contract expires in six months and when he is being targeted by lots of clubs, it is normal to ensure that he will stay with us,” Monaco CEO Thiago Scuro told L’Équipe. Hütter’s deal with Les Monégasques now runs until 2027.
However, a report from L’Équipe last week referred to signs of unrest in the dressing room and emerging fractions amid the recent slump. However, Hütter has now received the backing of his CEO, in the wake of a 7-1 win over FC Nantes on Saturday.
“You have to take into consideration that he brought the club into the Champions League for the first time in five years, that six players in the current squad are from the academy. In Ligue 1 and in the Champions League, it is one of the youngest teams and he has results. There was never any discussion about changing the manager,” said Scuro, whilst denying suggestions that assistant manager Damien Perrinelle could be an option in the interim, in the event of (highly unlikely) Hütter’s sacking.
With Monaco 16 points behind Paris Saint-Germain, Scuro said that challenging Les Parisiens would have been “very ambitious” this year. “It is without doubt the best PSG team that we have ever seen,” he added.
The objective nonetheless remains to close the gap to Luis Enrique’s side and Scuro sees adding experience as a means of doing so. “In the future, we may have to bring in more maturity and leadership, but we have shown that we are already ready to be in the top three in Ligue 1,” he said.
Those comments mirror those made by Hütter during Get French Football News’ exclusive interview with the Austrian last week. “It is my opinion that we must take the next step […] for sure, in some games, we miss a little bit of experience, in the right moments,” he told us.
