Legendary former Inter and Barcelona forward Luis Suarez believes that Inter slipped up on three decisive occasions to hand the Serie A title to city rivals AC Milan last season.

Speaking to Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport in an interview published in today’s print edition, Suarez named the Milan derby lost in February, the dip in form following it, and the surprise loss away to Bologna in April as the key moments that cause the Nerazzurri to miss out on the title.

Inter had looked to be in a commanding position in the Scudetto race heading into the Milan derby at the start of February, having surged to the top of the Serie A table with a winning run between November and January.

After going ahead in the first half the Nerazzurri’s position looked even stronger, and yet they lost the match 2-1 in quickfire circumstances, whilst they never really seemed to recover from this shock blow.

Suarez stated that “An element for Inter this season will be their motivation. Last year they lost the Scudetto in three key moments – in the derby even after they had dominated, in the post-derby crisis in results, and then of course in Bologna.”

He also noted that “Inter once again have two well-defined sources of goals.”

“Lukaku’s return means potentially adding between 18 and 20 goals,” Suarez suggested. “Which, when added to those of Lautaro, someone who certainly hits double figures, can guarantee the team thirty goals. Dzeko will always play his part, but the hierarchy is clear.”
