Liverpool torn apart by Napoli

Scorers: Zieliński (PEN) 5′, 47′, Anguissa 31′, Simeone 45′; Díaz 49′.

Last year’s runners-up Liverpool conceded three goals in the the first half as they were left stunned after being dismantled by Napoli.

They gave away two penalties in the first 20 minutes, the first dispatched by Piotr Zieliński after James Milner handled in the box.

Victor Osimhen won the second after a foul by Virgil van Dijk but saw his effort saved by Alisson Becker.

However, Napoli extended their lead midway through the first half with André-Frank Zambo Anguissa sliding the ball past Becker’s near post after being sipped in by Zieliński.

Luciano Spalletti’s side were dealt a blow when Osimhen had to be replaced through injury but his replacement, Giovanni Simeone, came off the bench to tap in the third just before half-time from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s cross.

Zieliński added the fourth at the start of the second half with Luis Díaz curling home what turned out to be just a consolation goal for the visitors minutes later.

Liverpool fall to their heaviest Champions League defeat since the 3-0 semi-final loss to Barcelona in 2019.

Lewandowski scores hat-trick as Barcelona hit five

Scorers: Kessié 13′, Lewandowski 34′, 45+3′, 68′, Torres 71′; Sýkora 45′.

Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick on his Champions League debut for Barcelona as they comfortably disposed of Viktoria Plzeň.

Franck Kessié headed home his first goal for the club to give the Blaugrana the lead after Jules Koundé had flicked a corner on to the back post..

But it was all about the Pole tonight and he got off the mark with a placed shot into the bottom corner from the edge of the box after being found by Sergi Roberto.

Jan Sýkora headed home Vaclav Jemelka’s cross to look to give the Czech champions hope of getting back into the game only for Lewandowski to restore the two-goal cushion with a header at the far post after being picked out by Ousmane Dembélé.

He completed his hat-trick in the 68th minute with a curler into the bottom corner from outside the area taking his competition tally to 88 and above Karim Benzema in the all-time top goalscorer list.

Ferran Torres made it five after volleying home Dembélé’s delicious chipped through ball.

Incredible conclusion in Madrid

Scorers: Hermoso 90+2′, Griezmann 90+11′; Uribe (PEN) 90+6′.

Sent-off: Taremi 82′.

There was late drama as three goals were scored in stoppage time in a remarkable conclusion to the game at the Wanda Metropolitano.

Mehdi Taremi had been sent-off for two bookable offences for the hosts late into the second half leading to an onslaught on the Porto goal from Atleti.

Diego Simeone’s side got the breakthrough and it came from an unlikely source with centre-back Mario Hermoso’s shot deflecting and looping over Diogo Costa to give Atleti the lead in the 92nd minute.

That looked to be the winner until four minutes later Porto were awarded a penalty after the ball was handled in the box – by Hermoso.

Mateus Uribe stepped up to squeeze the penalty into the bottom corner to look to salvage a point for Porto but there was one last twist.

Antoine Griezmann was unmarked at the back post to head home Axel Witsel’s flick-on from a corner in the 101st minute to steal the win for Atlético.

Sané helps Bayern get revenge on Inter

Scorers: Sané 25′, D’Ambrosio (OG) 66′.

Leroy Sané was in inspired form as Bayern Munich saw off Inter in a closely-contested game at the San Siro.

The German winger broke the deadlock 25 minutes into the game, running on to Joshua Kimmich’s lofted pass before taking a touch, rounding Andre Onana and slotting the ball into the empty net.

He played a huge part in the second goal, playing a delicate one-two with Kingsley Coman before forcing the ball across goal for Danilo D’Ambrosio to turn into his own net.

Joaquin Correa missed a great chance from close range to get the hosts back into the game but it is Bayern that delivered some small revenge for the 2010 final defeat.

Richarlison the hero for Tottenham

Scorers: Richarlison 76′, 81′.

Sent off: Mbemba 49′.

Richarlison struck twice on his Champions League debut to help Tottenham overcome ten-man Marseille.

The visitors were reduced to ten men when Chancel Mbemba fouled Son-Heung Min and was deemed to be the last man but they managed to frustrate Antonio Conte’s side for the majority of the second half until the Brazilian intervened.

He finally broke the deadlock in the 76th minute, powering a header past Paul Lopez from Ivan Perišić’s cross.

It was almost a carbon copy of the first goal for his second, as this time he headed in Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg’s deep cross after Marseille had failed to clear a corner.

Tottenham are up and running in their campaign.

Sylla earns Club Brugge win over Leverkusen

Scorers: Sylla 42′

Abakar Sylla’s goal was enough for Club Brugge to pull off a shock victory over Bayer Leverkusen.

The 19-year-old headed home Andreas Skov Olsen’s corner at the near post, with some help from goalkeeper Lukáš Hrádecký to bring home a stunning three points for the Belgian side.

Patrik Schick thought he had equalised in the 75th minute only to see his header chalked off for the tightest of offsides by the new semi-automated offside technology.

Rangers brushed aside by Ajax on Champions League return

Scorers: Álvarez 17′, Berghuis 32′, Kudus 33′, Bergwijn 80′

Ajax took 33-minutes to crush Rangers’ spirits on their return to Champions League group stage action before Steven Bergwijn completed the rout late in the second half.

The hosts took an early lead through Edson Álvarez who, unmarked, ghosted into the six-yard to head home from Steven Berghuis’ corner.

Turning goalscorer this time, Berghuis doubled Ajax’s lead with a helping hand from a big deflection before Mohammed Kudus scored an exceptional solo goal.

Receiving a pass on the turn, the 22-year-old drove away from James Tavernier and into the penalty area. Still with plenty to do though, Kudus fired an emphatic strike back across goal and beyond the diving Jon McLaughlin in the Rangers goal.

Rangers thought they’d found a consolation goal but Borna Barisic’s wonderful strike was ruled out for offside before Bergwijn latched onto a loose back pass to settle matters, rounding McLaughlin and tapping into an empty net.

Second-half flurry sees Sporting thrash Frankfurt

Scorers: Marcus 65′, Trincao 67′, Santos 82′

Three second-half goals saw Sporting thrash last year’s Europa League winners Eintracht Frankfurt at the Deutsche Bank Park.

Sporting thought they were awarded an early penalty when Marcus Edwards went down under Christopher Lenz’s challenge. However, after a VAR consultation, the referee overturned his decision judging that Edwards had trod on the defender.

The visitors would strike twice in the space of two minutes in the second period the crush Frankfurt spirits.

Edwards may have been denied the penalty but the 23-year-old would find the back on the net just after the hour mark striking home after Hidemasa Morita’s cutback.

Morita and Edwards were involved again not two minutes later. The former’s first-time pass sprung a swift counterattack before Edwards laid the ball for Trincao to finish from close range.

Second-half substitute Nuno Santos put the game to bed as the clock ticked beyond the final 10-minutes, tapping home after a sensational run and cross by Pedro Porro.
