Nantes have kept their place in Ligue 1 thanks to their first-leg win despite losing the second leg 1-0 to Toulouse (2-2 on aggregate) in the relegation play-off.

Vakoun Issouf Bayo’s goal kept Toulouse’s promotion dream alive but they remain in Ligue 2 due to the away goals rule.

Antoine Kombouaré’s side were in a solid position going into the game following their 2-1 victory in the first leg but were pegged back by a resilient Toulouse side who dominated the first 45 minutes.

Amine Adli danced past four Nantes players before smashing a left-footed effort just over the bar as the visitors continued that dominance in the second half.

But Toulouse finally got their reward when a clever team move led to Adli’s whipped cross being headed in at the back post by Vakoun Issouf Bayo.

The goal appeared to spark Nantes into life and Randal Kolo Muani was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet when he drove into the area but his curling effort was well saved by Maxime Dupé.

Patrice Garande’s side then saw their task in hand get harder when they had Nathan Ngoumou sent off for a high foot.

Nantes held out to ensure they will be playing Ligue 1 football next season, meaning it’s another year in the second tier for Toulouse.
