John Kennedy could be appointed as Neil Lennon’s replacement – but only if the Celtic board see him as “another Brendan Rodgers”.

That is the view of former Rangers and Scotland manager Alex McLeish who, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested the 37-year-old would not be a popular choice of manager among the Parkhead faithful.

Kennedy has taken interim charge of the Bhoys after Lennon’s resignation was confirmed on Wednesday morning.

The current Leicester City boss started his post-playing career as a coach at Chelsea before he took charge at Watford in 2008.

McLeish has suggested Kennedy could follow a similar path to the former Hoops boss but warned it may not go down well with supporters.

Discussing the McLeish told Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge: “I don’t know too much about big John but he must be a decent coach when he‘s in that position.

“So maybe John, he could get the job.

“I wouldn’t think that Celtic fans would be 100 per cent in approval of him getting the role. I would think they’d be looking for a big name.

“Maybe they see John in the kind of mould of a Brendan Rodgers, that type of coach.

“Brendan was a terrific coach and he’s become a great man-manager as well. He’s got it all.

“They possibly see that in John, that’s the only way I would see that John would get that role, if Celtic see him as maybe another Brendan Rodgers.”
