Michael Carrick will be aiming to guide the club to promotion to the Premier League this year, with the team having narrowly missed out on a play-off place in the previous campaign.

However, off the field, Carrick and the board will also be keen to keep a keen eye on the players who could depart in 2025.

Here we look at the players that are into the final 12 months of their time at the Riverside.

Ben Doak

Ben Doak is one of two loan signings currently at Middlesbrough that will depart the club at the end of the campaign.

The Scot arrived from Liverpool late in the summer window, signing on a temporary basis for the rest of the season.

The 18-year-old is an exciting prospect, and the Reds will be hoping that he can compete consistently in Carrick’s side this year in order for him to gain important experience at senior level.

George Edmundson

George Edmundson is another loan player at Middlesbrough that was signed late in the summer window.

The Ipswich Town loanee will be hoping to feature regularly for Carrick's side, having fallen down the pecking order at Portman Road prior to his exit.

The defender did feature for the Tractor Boys 10 times last year as they gained promotion to the Premier League, so that experience could be valuable to have in the squad for the year ahead (all stats from Fbref).

Matt Clarke

Matt Clarke’s time at Middlesbrough has been bogged down by a significant injury issue that kept him out of action for over a year.

The defender is now back in the team, featuring regularly in Carrick's side in the new season.

However, he is entering the final 12 months of his contract with the Championship side, although they have the option to extend it by a further year.

Anfernee Dijksteel

Anfernee Dijksteel has proven a useful squad player for Middlesbrough under Carrick, but has never really cemented himself as a key figure in the team.

The defender is in the final year of his contract, with Boro even reportedly rejecting interest for him over the summer.

He could leave as a free agent in 2025 if no deal is agreed between now and next summer.

Tommy Smith

Tommy Smith is another player entering the final year of his Boro contract, with an exit in 2025 on the cards.

The 32-year-old has not featured for the second division side since a 1-0 win over Birmingham City in October 2023, having been absent due to an Achilles injury.

Jonathan Howson

Jonny Howson’s time at Middlesbrough could come to an end in 2025 unless a new contract agreement can be made, as he enters the final months of his current deal.

Howson made 38 appearances in the Championship last year.
