Mats Hummels insists Borussia Dortmund still have a lot to prove as their season enters a critical period.

A comfortable home win against Arminia Bielefeld on Saturday kept the momentum going from recent victories over Schalke and Sevilla.

But BVB still lie three points outside the top four in the Bundesliga, and are not guaranteed of progress to the last eight of the Champions League yet despite their 3-2 first leg win over Sevilla in Spain.

“The three games were good for us, after we had a really really bad phase before,” Hummels told Sky Deutschland.

“We now have three absolute crackers. We now have to prove that that we are really one step further.”

The three “crackers” the 32-year-old was referring to are Tuesday’s DFB Pokal quarter-final at Borussia Mönchengladbach, next Saturday’s Klassiker at Bayern Munich, and their Champions League date on Tuesday week.

“We play a little more determined, a little more serious. But not yet as we could. There is an improvement to be seen, but also potential for improvement,” Hummels added.

“We are playing well. The overall attitude has gotten a lot better. But we’re still a long way from where we need to be.”

Hummels played 85 minutes in this customary central defensive role against Arminia before making way for youngster Dan-Axel Zagadou late on at the Westfalenstadion.
