In a very even game throughout, neither side created many chances in the opening periods as defences reigned supreme.

The best chance of the first half fell to Marcel Sabitzer but his shot from inside the box was well saved by Leverkusen keeper Lukas Hradecky.

Into the second half, the champions stepped up a bit but struggled to find their killer touch. Nathan Tella was the man who was presented with the most openings but the former Southampton winger could not finish on any occasion.

Dortmund took the lead with nine minutes left. A quick throw-in came to Sabitzer who put a cross into the box that Niclas Füllkrug volleyed home to send the home crowd into a frenzy.

Leverkusen threw everything at Dortmund looking for an equaliser but first thought they had gone down to 10 when Victor Boniface was shown red. However it was reduced to a yellow by VAR.

In the 97th minute, they got that goal through Josip Stanišić, who tapped home after a corner came his way at the back post to keep Xabi Alonso’s side’s dream unbeaten season alive with yet another late strike.
