The 29-year-old moved from rivals Borussia Dortmund in 2016 and played the most minutes amongst Bayern centre-backs last season.
According to Bild, Hummels could seek a move elsewhere as he reportedly wishes to be an everyday starter.
Kovač has consistently rotated his three centre-backs (Hummels, Niklas Süle, Jérôme Boateng) in hopes of keeping everybody fresh.
Despite heavy rumours to leave over the summer, it appears Boateng is Bayern’s number one centre-back. He’s started in four of Bayern’s six Bundesliga fixtures and both of their Champions League ties.
Süle has also been a constant fixture in Bayern’s back line, as he’s started all but one Bundesliga match – though he has barely played at all in Bayern’s Champions League matches.
Hummels, meanwhile, started against both Benfica and Ajax yet has only started in three of Bayern’s Bundesliga matches.
Hummels will naturally be a target for Manchester United, as he turned them down in 2014 and they need defensive reinforcements.
