Mark Schwarzer: Daniel Arzani's Celtic loan was a huge mistake

Daniel Arzani is one of Australia’s brightest young talents, making the World Cup squad at just 19 and making the move to Manchester City after an impressive stint with fellow City Football Group A-League side Melbourne City.

City sent Arzani to Celtic on a two-year loan but, unfortunately, an ACL tear has kept him on the sidelines the entire time less a 23-minute cameo against Dundee last year.

Arzani is on the comeback trail but compatriot Mark Schwarzer isn’t exactly confident the Hoops are the best club where he can develop his skill set.

“Daniel Arzani is one of those players who has been incredibly exciting and particularly leading up to the World Cup in 2018,” Schwarzer told Goal.

“He had a phenomenal breakthrough season in the A-League. He didn’t play enough games over 90 minutes, which is something he needs to build on.

“The Celtic move is one which I am not sure is the best move for him just yet. But it is about playing games and continuing to develop.

“His injury came at the very worst time as he just arrived and got his first opportunity to play from the start.

“It was not only unfortunate for his career at Celtic but also for Australia. I just hope that he can get back to the level he was at before his injury.”

To make things worse for the young winger, Celtic brought in Mohamed Elyounoussi on a year-long loan from Southampton, which assuredly pushed him further down the order.
