Marcus Rashford took his Manchester United goalscoring tally into double figures for the season on Tuesday evening, but former Red Devils striker Michael Owen still isn’t convinced by the England man.
After grabbing his 10th goal of the campaign to open the scoring against Nottingham Forest, Rashford has now already doubled his disappointing 2021/22 return of five goals in all competitions.
The forward’s form in front of goal is a major boost for United boss Erik ten Hag who finds himself short of firepower in attack following the departure of Cristiano Ronaldo and the club’s failure to land top transfer target Cody Gakpo from Ajax.
Speaking during Amazon Prime Video’s coverage of the Forest clash, however, Owen was far from sold on Rashford’s ability to be a regular goalscorer for the 13-time Premier League champions.
“He is not your main goalscorer,” insisted Owen, per The Mirror. “If you’re at United, Rashford isn’t going to be scoring you 30 goals a season like a Wayne Rooney, like a Robin van Persie.
“He will contribute every year from that left-hand side position. If you think he’s going to be your main man then I would question it.”
Owen went on to claim that Rashford ‘wasn’t obsessed with goals’ and accused him of lacking ‘the killer instinct’ to put the ball in the back of the net.
Even when Rashford was doing just that, though, Owen didn’t seem at all excited.
Back in 2019, Owen was part of the BT Sport panel covering the crucial second leg of United’s Champions League last-16 tie with Paris Saint-Germain.
Having lost the first leg 2-0 at Old Trafford, United required a dramatic turnaround at the Parc des Princes if they were to have any chance of qualification for the quarter-finals.
With United leading 2-1 at half-time thanks to a Romelu Lukaku brace, though, the historic comeback was very much on.
When the visitors were awarded a late penalty, hope turned into reality for the thousands of travelling United supporters as Rashford slammed the spot-kick past a despairing Gianluigi Buffon.
Given the magnitude of the occasion, BT Sport had lined up a panel of guests formed exclusively of former United players.
Joining Owen alongside host Gary Lineker in the studio were his former Old Trafford teammates Rio Ferdinand and Owen Hargreaves.
When Rashford’s penalty hit the net, Ferdinand and Hargreaves exploded with joy. To be fair, even die-hard Leicester supporter Lineker got swept up in the excitement of the occasion.
The same can’t be said for Owen.
Despite playing on 52 occasions for United, scoring 17 times and winning the Premier League trophy in the 2010/11 season, Owen couldn’t have looked any less bothered when Rashford scored.
You can check out his completely underwhelmed reaction below.
While the celebrations unfolded around him, Owen remained sat down with his arms folded, as though nothing had happened.
Of course, Owen still has ties to United’s fierce rivals Liverpool, with whom he began his playing career and there’s no such thing as divided loyalties when it comes to those two clubs.
With that said, after one of the greatest turnarounds in Champions League history, we don’t reckon some form of reaction is too much to ask.
