Dortmund manager Marco Rose’s return to Borussia-Park was spoiled on Saturday after Borussia Mönchengladbach won 1-0.
Scorers: Zakaria 37′
It was a heated encounter right from the start with plenty of physicality and intensity as each side looked to find the breakthrough early.
Mats Hummels was the first to have the ball in the back of the net for the visitors but it was ruled out for offside.
Chances then continued to fly but the hosts were the ones smiling after Dortmund failed to clear the ball in the box and a persistent Denis Zakaria made it 1-0.
Down a goal and already without Erling Haaland and Marco Reus due to injury, things would then get even worse for the visitors.
A second yellow for Mahmoud Dahoud saw the midfielder sent off, leaving plenty of work to do for Rose’s squad.
The match remained a nervy affair after the break with Gladbach lunging towards goal looking to put the game to bed.
Eventually, Dortmund’s sparse attack couldn’t find a way to tie things up and the hosts hold on to all three points.
