Liverpool had submitted a deal sheet for Guehi, who passed a medical, having agreed on a £35million fee with Palace.

However, with the transfer deadline having passed, Palace decided to call the deal off as they weren’t able to find a suitable replacement.

Both Liverpool and Guehi, who was set to sign a five-year contract, wanted the move to go ahead.

Palace had agreed to sell Guehi, who captained the club to the FA Cup last season, with the club announcing the arrival of 19-year-old centre-back Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse.

Palace pulled out of negotiations for Brighton defender Igor due to issues with his medical, and those complications appear to have had a terminal impact on Guehi’s move to Liverpool.

Palace now look set to lose Guehi for free at the end of his contract next summer, despite chairman Steve Parish saying the club couldn’t afford to let the England international leave for nothing.

Guehi, who wanted assurances over playing time ahead of the World Cup, had always maintained he would be happy to stay at Selhurst Park, and the 25-year-old will now lead the club into Europe for the first time in their history.

Glasner was said to be extremely frustrated by Palace’s initial decision to sell Guehi, and the Austrian will be relieved to be able to call upon his captain heading into a season where his side are expected to compete on four fronts.
