Manchester United ‘would like’ to sign Ajax winger Antony in the current transfer window, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The Red Devils have been pursuing the talented 22-year-old for the majority of the summer and appear to be edging closer to reuniting him with his former manager Erik Ten Hag.

What is the latest news involving Antony?

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed that ‘new contacts will take place soon’ between United and Ajax over the potential sale of Antony.

It’s claimed that the Brazil international’s representatives want the reigning Eredivisie champions to ‘consider potential proposals’ for their client, while the club are holding out for a €80 million (£69m) fee.

Romano also states that while signing Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong remains United’s priority, Antony is ‘still one of the top names’ on their shortlist.

Ajax have already offloaded the likes of Sebastien Haller, Ryan Gravenberch and Noussair Mazraoui to Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich, respectively, and could be reluctant to let another one of their star performers leave.

However, the Amsterdam giants are known to be eager to snap up wantaway Tottenham attacker Steven Bergwijn, who could become Antony’s replacement at the Johan Cruijff ArenA.

What has Jones said about Antony?

Jones believes that Ajax are acting ‘cagey’ when it comes to negotiations over Antony but they actually ‘feel they could replace’ the South American in their squad.

He told GiveMeSport: “If they can get that other forward, that makes the difference. I think they would like Antony. At the moment Ajax are playing cagey, they’re acting like they can’t face losing Antony.

“I know for a fact that they are already looking at replacements, and they feel that that actually, it’s a position that they could replace; they feel they could replace Antony.”

Where would Antony fit in at Man Utd?

Antony, who Ten Hag previously labelled “top class”, has played almost exclusively on the right-wing throughout his senior career, cutting inside onto his favoured left foot to devastating effect.

It’s probable, should he make the switch to Old Trafford, that the skilful attacker would form a deadly front three alongside Jadon Sancho and five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo.

Sancho showed flashes of his true potential in his maiden campaign for United, racking up eight goal contributions in 38 appearances, with the majority of his outings coming from the left flank.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo was the club’s top scorer, finding the back of the net on 24 occasions, and is likely to lead the line once again.
