Manchester United managerial target, Graham Potter, is reportedly on his way to becoming the new Ajax manager.

The Red Devils have endured a disappointing campaign, where even an FA Cup semi-final victory over Coventry City felt like a loss.

The team did win 4-2 last night against last placed Sheffield United but once more, failed to impress outside of moments of individual quality, largely from Bruno Fernandes.

As a result of the side’s poor season, Erik ten Hag’s job is seen to be heavily under threat and the new techincal director, Jason Wilcox, is reported to have been charged with carrying out an audit on the Dutchman’s position at the club.

As a result, the press has wildly speculated about who would hypothetically replace Ten Hag should the axe fall and one name that has been heavily linked is that of former Chelsea manager, Graham Potter.

It had been reported that Potter was a favourite of Sir Jim Ratcliffe and that he had even held a secret meeting with incoming sporting director, Dan Ashworth.

What’s more, the Englishman has been said to be very keen on taking the job.

However, it was relayed here recently that Ajax were a potential landing spot for the former Brighton man and Fabrizio Romano recently claimed that there has been no contact yet between Potter and United.

Some reports suggested that Potter had turned down the Ajax position but according to new information, this may have been wide off the mark.

ESPN Netherlands report that “Ajax is in contact with Graham Potter about the vacant coaching position. After his failed adventure at Chelsea, the 48-year-old Englishman is clearly in the picture to become the new coach of the Amsterdam team”.

“The coming weeks will also reveal whether the conversation with the former coach … will be continued and where Potter’s coaching future lies”.

It is also reported by the news channel that “the possible arrival of Potter cannot be seen separately from the possible return of general manager Alex Kroes. The 50-year-old Kroes was recently suspended by the supervisory board of Ajax for insider trading in Ajax shares”.

Nonetheless, “The Board of Directors, club members and Ajax supporters, among others, want Kroes to return and there will be a meeting on Thursday to hear his case and make a decision on the CEO”.

It would certainly come as a surprise if Potter were to rule himself out of a move to Manchester United so early on in the process.

With Wilcox and INEOS yet to make a decision on Ten Hag’s future and unlikely to do so until after the FA Cup final on the 25th of May, it would seem hasty for Potter to take up a role elsewhere, unless of course, he was never really a target after all.
