Manchester United are unlikely to sign Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder Ruben Neves unless they meet the asking price between £40-45 million, The Sun reports.

The Red Devils were heavily linked with the Portugal international at the start of the transfer window, and it was suggested they could make a bid of around £35m.

Nothing has materialised between the clubs since, and it is now reported that Wolves are holding out for £40-45m to sanction the sale of the Portugal international this month.

The Midlands outfit are confident that they can starve off interest with the price tag. Premier League rivals Arsenal have also been credited with an interest in the 24-year-old.

Our view:

Neves has established himself as a regular in the defensive midfield role for Wolves. He has impressed with an average of 2.2 tackles per league game this season.

Aside from his defensive contributions, he has excelled with his regular pressing while chipping in with two goals and an assist from 19 league appearances.

His all-round attributes fit in perfectly with Ralf Rangnick’s system at Old Trafford, but United don’t seem to be planning any approach for his services this month.

With Rangnick only in interim charge, the onus appears on waiting for a permanent manager to be announced this summer before pursuing midfield reinforcements.

Neves will be one of the top names on their radar, but they could miss out on him by then if the Gunners or any other club make a late raid before Monday’s transfer deadline.
