As it has so often before, Old Trafford played host to the Cristiano Ronaldo show on Saturday.

Back in a Manchester UnitedNewcastle United in a 4-1 win that had the Theatre of Dreams rocking.

Whether or not the 36-year-old is the player to carry United to a first Premier League title since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2018 remains to be seen, of course. As prolific as he is, there are concerns as to the actual need for him in the side, particularly given some of the problems in defensive midfield.

Indeed, former club Juventus did appear to regress slightly after signing him in 2018. Goals may never be a problem for Ronaldo but, given his lack of pressing and the need to play to his strengths, he may not necessarily be the correct fit for a United side not exactly short on firepower already.

There will be tougher tests than Newcastle, of course, but none of that was evident on Saturday.

International teammate Bruno Fernandes, who does not always convince when lining up alongside his compatriot for Portugal, particularly thrived.

Stunning goal aside, the 27-year-old looked a creative light not dimmed by the dominant presence of Ronaldo in what is a promising, albeit not definitive proof, sign.

While there were so many moments to hit headlines on Ronaldo's second debut, one touch in particular from Fernandes was beautiful to behold, although it went slightly under the radar.

As you can see in the video above, Fernandes controls a floated long ball with a graceful ease not always associated with a player largely known for his relentless ability to drive his team forward.

Jumping into the air and flicking out his (supposedly weaker) left in a backheel-like motion, the delicacy of the touch fools his marker and brings the midfielder into space, where he can then drive into the box.
