Bruno Fernandes took matters into his own hands when Manchester United were trailing against Sheffield United last night.

Conceding defeat to the team sat rock-bottom of the Premier League would’ve marked yet another significant low point of the Reds’ season, and given that the Blades led twice in the game at Old Trafford, it became a very real prospect for fans in attendance.

In the 61st minute, when the scoreline was 2-1 in the away side’s favour, Fernandes converted from the spot to level the tie with just under a half-hour to play. He then produced a scintillating moment of magic just 20 minutes later when, after receiving the ball in the middle of the park, he struck an inch-perfect left-footed rocket from 25 yards out that proved unsaveable for Wes Foderingham.

Another quickfire goal saw Rasmus Hojlund seal all three points when he was teed up by his captain in the 85th minute.

Fernandes’ contributions on the evening extended a remarkable streak of notching a goal contribution in each of his past five outings (all competitions). In that time, he has scored seven and assisted two.

To make the midfielder’s showing yesterday even more impressive, he did it all with a broken right hand. Times Sport has revealed that he sustained the injury against Coventry City last Sunday but was adamant about starting for Wednesday’s crucial Premier League clash, in which he was the most important man on the pitch.

The report adds: “The gesture was well received within the club, where he is viewed as a resilient character and inspirational leader.

“Fernandes played with heavy strapping on his right hand and it was noticeable that he was trying to keep his hand away from his teammates during the celebrations for the final goal to protect it from further damage.”
