Manchester United legend Roy Keane has sharply disagreed with Roy Keane over whether Bruno Fernandes is a winner or not.
Fernandes is currently in red-hot form for United and has registered seven goals and two assists in his last five games for the club.
The United skipper was the Red Devils’ outstanding performer as they beat Sheffield United 4-2 at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
His brace restored parity for the team and then gave them a lead. He then went on to grab an assist for Rasmus Hojlund’s 85th-minute strike.
Fernandes now has 10 goals and seven assists to his name in 32 Premier League appearances this term.
Even more impressive are his creative numbers. The midfielder has created 99 chances in the Premier League and 140 across all competitions – the most of any player in Europe’s big-five leagues.
In his last two games alone (vs. Coventry City and Sheffield United), the skipper has fashioned 18 chances. Such has been the level of his impact, especially during a season in which United have struggled on the pitch.
Speaking on the latest episode of the Stick to Football podcast, former Lionesses star Jill Scott pinpointed Fernandes’ tantrums and perceived poor attitude at his teammates and match officials. Scott suggested that Fernandes’ theatrics could be a sign that he is not the unifying symbol currently needed in the Old Trafford dressing room.
However, Arsenal legend Ian Wright didn’t have any of it as he stood up for the Portuguese playmaker.
Wright said, “Yeah but Jill, Bruno’s a winner, he’s got his fault where you see him doing that [throws arms in the air].”
Keane snapped back, “He’s won nothing in his career! He’s 29 years of age, he’s won nothing!”
Wright replied, “He’s the kind of player that is trying…”
Keane doubled down as he remarked, “What’s he won in his career? He’s won very little by the way.”
Wright then stated, “In respects of wanting to be a winner, his standards are high.” He added, “And let’s face it, take Bruno out of Man United right now, we’re talking about players who have improved or haven’t, if he’s not doing what he’s doing, Man United are nowhere near where they are.”
“He’s frustrated, he probably sees it in training every day, people not maybe up to the standard of what he’s looking for.”
“And it just spills over on a Saturday, because he brings it, If Man United are going to be saved in a game, it’s probably him who’s going to do it. Yes, he’s got every right to be upset with them, because they should be doing better.”
Keane conceded that Fernandes is a fine player but went on to explain that he doesn’t improve his teammates. “I think he’s a brilliant player, no doubt about that, a talented boy, but does he help people out? Does he make the other players around him better? The answer is 100 per cent no.”
Fernandes and United return to action this weekend when they take on Vincent Kompany’s Burnley.
